Volunteer

Volunteers help Chess for Success provide optimal programming to students, while keeping our overhead costs low. Thank you for supporting our mission in this important way.

Please complete the application, or e-mail info@chessforsuccess.org.

Chess Clubs

What to expect: Chess clubs are the core of our program.  Most of them meet twice a week for an hour after school, October through March. Needs will vary according to the club. Example tasks are: set up, attendance, pair players, and more. We consider location, availability, and transportation when assigning volunteers to clubs.

Requirements: Must be able to commit to a consistent schedule and pass a background check. Chess knowledge or classroom management experience is always appreciated.

Tournaments

Tournaments are for K-12 students across the state. Shifts are available on Saturdays, making them a better option for volunteers who work during the week. Help with set-up/tear-down, check-in, scoring, answering technical questions, or staffing tables. Shifts do not have to be consistent, volunteers can pick tournaments based on their availability.

December: Tournament practices (Chess for Success students only), 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

January-February: 24 regional tournaments to qualify for the state tournament, starting at 8:30 a.m. until the afternoon. The tournaments are five rounds.

March: Chess for Success Oregon State Tournaments, shifts are available all day Friday and Saturday.

April/May: Girls Play Chess Tournament; City of Portland Tournament

Requirements: None! Some roles require chess knowledge.

Other Opportunities

Fundraiser volunteers: We have events going on throughout the year and we need help in many areas. No experience necessary!

Committee and Board Members: We have a dedicated Board of Directors who oversee our operations, but they need help!  We have opportunities for numerous committees you can serve on including a luncheon committee, a volunteer committee, or a development committee.

Did we miss something you would love to help us with? Let us know! We love putting together projects for our volunteers based on their skills and interests. Contact info@chessforsuccess.org to get started.
